Prodigy The Dirt Chamber Volume One

Liam Howlett released the dirt chamber volume one in 1999 it was his first solo production

the importance and emphasis on this being his first ever solo album is dotted all over the digipack
On the cover the number 1 is circled in a chaotic manner representing the artists caotic music and his chaotic personality the number one also emphasizes the beginning of his solo carrera. and the beging of an adveture the listiener will part take in when listiening to this album.
the circle also repersents that he has thought long and hard over this album and its been selected and debated, reciving a halo like white circle. almost making it seem holy and special but of course this album is very special to him being his first

Liam also uses a font which seems like its scratched and engraved on the album almost like the scratching you would see in a prison cell, this couldrepresent the frustration he had whilst he worked hard on this album and it could also represent the time he spent on the album.

The 1 might also represent his early music tastes liam has which is shown in his choice of songs in the remixes featured in his album

Ants are known for there hardworking and there ambition, liam has used an ant stencil to represent the amount of hard work he has put into this album. but also the ambition he has for the album but it is also a useful marketing tool as the stencil is also used by his more famous band the prodigy by using the logo he is automatically creating a link with the prodigy so that exsisting fans would become interested in tha album

The overall picture on this digipack is a lock this makes it seem like the album was protected or that whilst liam howlett made this album he unlocked himself or that he is allowing you into his life and his musical world. but this lock is also broken so he has seen some struggels whilst making this albumbut it also

on the back the lock theme is still carried on but theres also images of records music equipment and graffitti style writing this all helps to build an image of liams personality.

the messy studio relays the image of a messy work and a artist who works caotically but also

The grafitti helps to keep him seem street and edgey
Overall this digpack contains many differnt themes and holds no sterotypes but also breaks the concventions of dance music so i would evaulate this product as a sucess

Analysis of two other dubstep music videos

I am going to analize two differnt music videos from the genre of dubstep, because dubstep is a new genre which is just becoming mainstream with its remixs of la roux and other chart songs there are very few dubstep videos. so i ahve ahd to choose videos which are not strictly dubstep songs but songs from artists whihc have created other songs which are dubstep but i belive the videos will still have very close conventions to that of what a dubstep video should have and they will have a very similar target market so this is still a very useful exercise

Chase and status Ft. Plan B - Pieces

Chase and status is a duo who take inspiration from dubstep and many of thier track feture heavy dubstep beats. thier song Pieces featuring Plan B is a more mainstream single. i am going to use this track for analysis .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MJspL232c8

This music video follows a storey line of the band recording at a studio when they get delvierd a live video of one of the members ex-girlfriend, she has broken into his flat and is throwing a party destorying his pocession and ruining his life. he then runs through london espicallt camden to get back to his flat to find the last few partygoers and alot of damge done to his possesions

This video breaks some conventions but keeps quite a few.

The opening shot is a close up of a guitar somthing rarely seen in the dubstep scene so its unsual to open up such an important video with such a shot but it does grab the attention of the viewer as it is unexpected but we must remember this is a dubstep band who have created this song for a much more wider auidience . the shot then zooms out into the studio which is a much more dubstep related scene with the large piece of electronic equipment as dubstep is a very electronic sound it is much more related to the dubstep scene we can notice thye clothing that the 3 artists are wearing unbranded clothing two of them are wearing the famous hoodie and the other a cardigain they are wearing dark clothes except for two white tshirts and the light coloured cardigain plan B is wearing a tshirt with bright almost graffiti like writing across the front keeping with conventions that the street art and dubstep have strong connections.

The film is also set at night another key connection between nightlife and dubstep. dubstep is also seen as quite a dark music with grimey and gritty bass so this dark setting only reflects the sound of the music. not only is it set at night but its also set in london the famous birthplace of dubstep and a city with a vibrant nightlife and with specially chossen locations such as Camden Lock which is known for its sub culture they only emphasize dubstep's alternate nightlife importance.

The key area of nightlife they feature in there video is house parties as the main antoganist in this film is a female who is throwing a party in plan b's flat. Dubstep is most played in clubs but to have parts of this video in a house party they go for a slightly different audience but still stay very strong to the going out and having a good time lifestyle

Digi pack

As part of the coursework we have to design a digipack for the track we are also making the music video for both types of media should follow the same themes and styles.

A digipack is a form of packaging and promotional media it normally acompanies a cd. the standard didgipack has 4 panels detailing defferant infomation and photos.

Digipacks are used to add value to the CD and be appealing to the target auidnece it is vital to make sure the digipack looks attractive to the target auidnece so they pursue further what is in the pack and itll be the first view of the artist the general public will have when they are shopping for new music.

I will keep a theme through out all of my media products to keep them connected and to create a strong brand for the artist

Targeting

A target audience is the main group of people a media product is designed to appeal to, if you don't target your media product you may try to please to many people making the product to vague and unattractive.

By checking Metaphi's myspace we have decided that the average metaphi fan follows this general trend.
-Young
-Male
-Live music and going out is important

Although it is very hard to find out who the target audience is for the dubstep genre as it is a relatively new genre with very little commercial interest at this time because of this low commercial interest there has been little market research in who listeners to dubstep and what the listeners activities are so i had to be a little bit more creative when trying to research the target audience so i decided to find out the main radio stations which play dubstep and who there target audience is as they will most likely have the same target audience as the dubstep genre.

BBC 1extra is a digital radio station which specialises in new urban music and a music genre which has seen the lime light recently on the radio station has been dubstep so i decided to research the audience profile of one extra as i expect it to be very similar to that of the dubstep audience.

From my research i found these key trends

-1Xtra's typical audience is between 15 and 30 years old
-They particularly but not exclusively aim for ethnic minorities
-Lower socio-eonomic groups such as the C's and D's

As i have mentioned before the main audience for the dubstep genre are as follow
-Young
-Male
-Enjoy going out and watching live music
-are normally from an urban setting

Dubstep is a sub genre of the main genre "Dance music" we have researched the fans of dance music and found these trends with dance music fans
- The target audience for the dance genre are either sexes between the ages of 18 and 23 we know this by visiting the Mtv website and they say that Mtv dance (a channel exclusively used for dance music) is targeted for an audience between 18 and 23 and as Mtv dance is one of the largest dance music channel we must keep this in consideration
http://www.mtvnetworks.co.uk/channels/music

When we decide on the concept of our film we must take these factors into consideration. We have decided that we should try to make the film pleasing to the fans in this order

-Fans of the artist
-Fans of the genre
-Fans of Dance music
-Fans of music
-and a general larger audience

to appeal to our target audience we made some very important decisions.

The main character although you might not see him we will represent him as being male this is so the male audience can relate to him and makes him appealing to them

We are going to set it in a city because most dubstep artists are from cities, most fans are from cities and most of the venues and clubs dubstep is played in are also in cities so the city culture is very important to how dubstep is becoming famous and we want to keep true to this.

Many dubstep fans are from urban surrondings so we want to include typical urban settings such as graffiti, alley ways and highrise buildings so that the film is recognizable to the auidence. and that they can relate to what is going on in the film.

Lighting

Lighting in media can be used to set a mood, atmosphere or outline important features in the shot.

There are two types of light. hard light and soft light

Hard light creates sharp shadows with a clean crisp edge unlike soft light which creates a blurred shadow where the edges are faded and not so distinct, by using soft light you make a person seem more youthful and beautiful.

in a 3 point lighting set up you will have a key light, feel light and back light.

the key light decides how much light is in the shot whilst the feel light can be used with gels to create an atmosphere.

if we wanted an atmosphere of horror we might use a red gel as the gel we create the subject to look more red and the light around him redish.

Storyboards are graphical representations of how the filming is going to be achieved we planned every shot and what we want in the shots although the story board isn't strict and we may stray from he board a few times by creating the storey board we have successfully decided how we are going to film and also brought all out concepts together.

On the left is what a blank storey board template looks like, i have used two of the templates with 7 differnt scenes each secen lasts around 30 second and i have shown this by using a time scale above each drawn image of what i wish each shot to look like

A2 Music video introduction

For A2 media we have been asked to design and create a music video, promotional poster and a digipack for a song which currently has none of those media products. For my project i am going to use the dubstep remix of the song Eliza's Aria by Elena Kats-Chernin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=or5mRjAOCsY
We have chosen this song because the genre is still fairly unknown, yet gaining recognition. there is a lot of flexibility with this kind song so should be easier to film as we can stray from the storey board.
The song is also very interesting because it clashes two genres together in an inspiring and creative way, we want to emphasize this more in the music video with a use of many camera tricks and techniques, the difference between the two genres also means we can have a wide range of ideas which will suit some conventions of one genre whilst also breaking the conventions of the other genre.

This track includes no lyrics, but a heavy electronic sound with bass and the use of snare sounds. dubstep originated from garage and drum and bass in the early 2000's in south London so we have used this urban beginning to influence the music video and promo pack.

So far we have come up with a concept of a first person adventure through a city at night time. we are hoping to emphasize the lights, creating pulsating lights which move with the beats of the track. we also hope to wash the screen with colors almost like a visualizer and whilst all this goes on we want there to be a vague storey line of a night out, although it will be up to the viewer to piece together there ideas about what is happening on screen. The storey line isn't the most important aspect but we want to make the video visually pleasing .

We have used inspiration from the music video smack my bitch up by the prodigy.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20tWDFxQq5A&feature=related

This music video is very similar to the concept we have as it is a first person adventure through out a city with strange going ons and funny twists in plot.

The peep show also uses many techniques and camera angles we want to use.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLOCzN5a19o&feature=fvst
The use of first person is a unique and not very used technique and for that reas it makes it very interesting and hopefully because its not style which is used often it will add a weird aspect to the film which will be interesting.

iTunes also has its own visualizer which creates swirling colors and images this has been a huge inspiration, we want to be able to have such special effects although there will be alot of work needed to make sure its an effective use of the inspiration.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhnYVA_Q5u0

Ron Fricke is an American film director who makes films which have scenes in the city and feature camera tricks and no actual storey line they flow together to slow piano music to create a artistic and visually pleasing film we are hoping to use some of his camera tricks to make a visual experience which is in time to the music and also looks amazing.
We are hoping to fuse our inspiration together in a original and unique way just like the artist has fused the heavy bass from the dubstep genre with the light and airy piano sound from the original piece by Elena Kats-Chernin

Both me and my partner will share the roles of camera man, actor and idea creator.
We hope to use camera, lighting and editing tricks to create a trippy and weird adventure which is interesting and visually pleasing

As well as creating a music video we are also creating a promo pack which will include a digipack and the advert for the digipack all three products will need to be linked together in the same theme as the music video. it is likely we will take the images for the print media whilst filming our video.
