Mise-en-scene

Mise-en-scene Is a french term which means put on stage this is from the original meaning which was used in theatrical plays and its the idea that everything on stage or in a shot was not just there by a coincidence but was in fact planned and put there for a purpose.
Mise-en-scene can be cut down into 4 different areas these 4 areas have to be carefully thought about and we have spent much time on thinking about what we can include in our shots to help make sure our media project is a success.

The 4 areas include.
-Setting and Location
-Props
-Colour
-Costume and Make Up

Setting is where the music video is based its the city and location were the acting and filming takes place not only does the location have to be just right so the viewer can relate to it, it also has to be a safe place to film were we can let our creativity flow with out worries of damaging or losing equipment. we want the setting to be exciting for the viewer but we don't want it to be somewhere new for the target audience we want people to be able to relate to the setting and see themselves being able to vi st the location or they may even find it recognizable.
We want to set our music video in a city. we want there to be a strong theme of other controversial street art and we want it to be bright and vibrant with alot of man made ligting.
we have looked at many possible locations and because Sussex is quite a rural area we have very limited options but the one place which stands out above the rest. is nationally recognized as a place for culture, music and art. And that is Brighton.
Brighton is a place with a strong culture and is known for its more liberal approach.
But it is also a place very important for many dance music fans as it is home town to dj's such as Fat Boy Slim. With such a strong links to the dance scene we think it would be a perfect location for a new and emerging dance genre like dubstep to have a music video set.
Just like any town though Brighton has perfect locations and locations which will not suit our video.
we have made a list of plausible areas we could film areas which are not only perfect for our video but also an areas which should reduce the risks involved with filming in a city at night time.
our list of locations include;
-The Graffiti wall of fame

-The lanes

-Sussex university

-A new housing complex near the train station

-City Centre

-The pier

Most of the potential viewer of our video would have seen these locations and would have most likely visted similar locations so they can relate to locations.

Our 2nd key area of mise-en-scene is props. Props are objects featured in media to help further the plot or storey line of the specific media project in this case the music video.
The problem we face is that we have very few actors planned to be in our video so the use of props may not be the most crucial area of mise-en-scene but we do have some ideas on how we are going to use props to further our media project. we might have a bag featured in our video as this can represent a journey. the orginal classical piece was used in an advert which was originally called "the journey continues" so this has a perfect connection. We also belive that dubstep is currently on a journey into the limelight with many dj's just making radio air time this year. we may also have the actor listening to an iPod as this is a iconic electronic device in the music industry.

The 3rd key area of mise-en-scene is color and how we use colors to represent certain themes, most of our color is going to come from man made lighting and because our film is set at night it is highly unlikely there will be any natural lighting.

I believe some of the most used color is going to be whites and reds. The whites will come from car headlights and street lighting these whites will represent the light sound of the original classical piece and we may be able to use the whites in time with certain aspects of the classical song, white is also a very good color to use for the classical parts of the song as white represents purity, cleanliness and freshness and as classical music is normally seen as a pure music form it fits perfect with what white represents. As dubstep is normally referred to as "dirty" it is another perfect representation of the contrast between the two genres, the reds will come from traffic lights, brake lights and shop windows this red can almost be bleeding through the white like the dubstep beats bleed through the classical tunes. a perfect use of color in coordination with the music.
Any other colors coming from graffiti or other props in the scene will be bright and noticeable such as the bright and noticeable music.

The 4th and final area of mise-en-scene is an area which is of lesser importance to me only because we will only have one main character in the video but we must still make sure it is an accurate representation of a character who is from an urban setting and also a character whom the audience can relate to, because my target audience are from the socio-economic groups of the C's and D's i don't want to alienate them with fancy clothing and "bling" so i am going to go for a simple look a big black jacket with hood and a pair of baggy jeans worn relatively low. This kind of dress code is seen across various music genres who all aim for the "C's and D's" so with it being a universal dress code i should also attract the wider audience.
